Toni and Piolo to beat Vice’s record?

Nagulat sila, na parang this newcomer Filipino movie making waves daw in the U.S.

Local stars study under US acting coach

“THE FILIPINO actors are wonderful,” said a renowned American acting coach who had a chance to work with local actors like Piolo Pascual and Sam Milby in a workshop.

Ivana Chubbuck — who has trained famous Hollywood celebrities like Charlize Theron, Halle Berry, Brad Pitt, Beyonce Knowles, Eva Mendes, and Jim Carry, among others — arrived last Thursday to conduct a two-day workshop with select contract artists of listed Lopez-led media giant ABS-CBN Corp.

Ms. Chubbuck had been invited by Filipino director Rahyan Carlos, who had trained under the acting coach in Los Angeles. Mr. Carlos is the artist training head of Star Magic, the talent development arm of ABS-CBN.

Aside from Pascual and Milby, other ABS-CBN contract stars who participated in the workshop were Jake Cuenca, Xian Lim, Gerald Anderson, Arjo Atayde, and Dimples Romana. Non-contract stars like Suzette Ranillo, Issa Litton, and Carla Martinez, also joined the group.

The acting coach has taught at The Julliard School of Drama in New York, and was honored by the Russian International Film Festival with a lifetime achievement award alongside director Francis Ford Coppola, and actor Leonardo DiCaprio.

In 2004, she wrote the book The Power of the Actor: The Chubbuck Technique. She described her book as “the 12-step acting technique that will take you from script to a living, breathing, dynamic character.”

She explained her acting technique is based on emotional memory, which urges actors to use memories from their past to generate current emotions. “In order to recreate real human behavior, and truly be in the scene, and avoid acting it out, I teach actors to go the source of what motivates human behavior. This is why I do not believe in acting classes. You will not be a bear, you will not be a tree experiencing sap running down your bark. We will go directly to the script, doing script analysis from the viewpoint of the science of behavior on how and why people really behave,” she said.

“I will teach you to replicate the character from your own personal needs and life experiences. This creates a character that is vivid, authentic, and living, and breathing in the moment. The Chubbuck Technique is a way to realize and embody a character so that the character becomes you, and you become the character,” she added.

For the ABS-CBN workshop, Ms. Chubbuck personally assigned specific scenes to actors, which she critiqued after each performance.

“I have a game plan for each of my students. I analyze, and take into account the actor’s strength and weaknesses, his problem areas, his history, and assign material that will best facilitate his growth and advancement as an individual. I choose the appropriate script material that will quickly fix specific difficulties, thereby enabling the actor to expand his abilities in his craft, and enhance his capacity to get the job,” she said.

Ms. Chubbuck — who also worked with Jessica Alba, Ian Somerhalder, Jared Leto, America Ferrera, David Boreanaz, David Spade, and Kate Bosworth — said her clients succeeded in Hollywood because hard work, and their fearless attitude to take risks.

“You have to realize that Hollywood is a big pond, and you got to rise in that pond, which has sharks, piranhas, and bacteria. You should be able to have to right stuff to be able to tackle the piranhas and rise above it. You will need to have the skills,” she said.

Mr. Carlos said the network invited Ms. Chubbuck as part of it’s thrust to continuously improve the craft of the contract stars.

Star Magic will conduct an intensive acting workshop on Chubbuck Technique on March 22 and 23 which will be open to both amateur and professional actors. The workshops will be conducted by Mr. Carlos who is the only Filipino authorized and trained by Ms. Chubbuck to teach her technique in the Philippines.

On Reinvention by Piolo Pascual

Brighter Life: On Reinvention by Piolo

On Reinvention by Piolo Pascual
On Reinvention by Piolo Pascual

As I marked my 15 years in show business , I realized what has kept me afloat throughout the many ups and downs of life under the limelight. Aside from faith, I consider my craft as my true north as well as sanctuary. It allows me to inhabit different lives, to express creativity, and, at times, to contribute in making this world a better place.

When it comes down to weighing what I want versus what needs to be done, hands down, I would always favor the one that will translate to a brighter life. This is where my road to reinvention is rooted. In deciding my next steps to stay relevant and productive, I became more discerning with each project I got involved with. From acting in front of camera to going behind-the-camera as a producer. From a practitioner of good money habits (thanks to my Mom!) to an advocate of financial literacy. From a mere supporter of good causes to being a catalyst for positive change.

Spring Films. It’s time! Brighter Life. Hebreo Foundation. SunPIOLOgy. These are some of the consequences of those self-help shifts.

My next mountains to conquer are still out there. As a producer, the field is both wide and deep. We have enjoyed modest success, from brokering the out-of-the-box “On The Job” for international appreciation, to putting Kimmy Dora’s brand of humor a part of local comedy history.

I also created a non-profit advocacy called Hebreo Foundation, supporting underprivileged scholars in their education, believing that they deserve the chance to also reinvent their present situation. With the help of Sun Life, we are able to open more doors towards the achievement of dreams, year after year.

Under ‘It’s Time,” we tried to break the cycle and lead the way to opening eyes wide to the benefits of foresight and financial preparedness . Today, it is enlightening to know that more and more Filipinos have joined our journey towards fulfilling a “Brighter Life” through proper money management.

Of course, I will continue to stand in front of the camera, but the view from behind the limelight, as you can glimpse, are proving to be just as sweet and rewarding.

On the set, when the director shouts ‘it’s a wrap’, it serves as a reminder that your shooting day is finished. For me, it also means that our collective goal is slowly being realized. On the surface, the business of show business is fleeting, and it takes courage and determination to go against the stream and pursue your own dream. And just like in everyday life, where no crew is around to capture the drama, you will always be, to quote from Invictus, the master of your ship and the captain of your soul.

Hollywood acting coach wants to watch Piolo’s movie

Piolo Pascual and Toni Gonzaga’s movie “Starting Over Again” caught the attention of Hollywood acting coach Ivana Chubbuck.

Ivana, who has trained famous Hollywood actors like Halle Berry, Charlize Theron, Brad Pitt, Eva Mendes, Beyonce and Jim Carrey, arrived in Manila on Thursday, February 27, to coach select Star Magic artists in a two-day workshop.

During the press conference, Ivana shared that she was able to see the short clip of “Starting Over Again,” which was playing inside ABS-CBN’s elevator.

“That looks like a really, really good movie. I want to see that,” Ivana said.

Impressed with Piolo

The acting coach admitted that she cannot say much about the movie yet because she was only able to see the trailer, but she was impressed, particularly with Piolo.

“I really look forward to working with the guy. He’s going to be at my workshop. He seems really talented and very handsome. So, it will be fun to work with him.”

Piolo and fellow Star Magic artists like Sam Milby, Jake Cuenca, Xian Lim, Arjo Atayde, Arron Villaflor and Dimples Romana, will be joining Ivana’s workshop on March 1 and 2.
Ivana expects local actors “to be wonderful.”
“Education never stops. That’s something everyone needs. Really great people know education never stops. He (Piolo) doesn’t need it, he’s smart enough to know that he could gain more and be even better with it (through education).”

Advice to celebrities

Ivana has a piece of advice for local celebrities who dream of making it to Hollywood.

“You have to realize that (Hollywood) is a big pond and you got to rise in that pond, which has sharks, piranhas and bacteria. You should be able to have the right stuff to be able to tackle the piranhas and rise above it. You need to have the skills.”

The author of the best-selling book “The Power of the Actor” stressed that an actor has to be a good swimmer to survive and continuous learning is important.

Ivana is holding the workshops upon the invitation of director and Star Magic training head Rahyan Carlos.

Piolo Pascual still a favorite leading man

Piolo Pascual
Piolo Pascual

A FELLOW writer and I watched Starting Over Again on its first day of release at SM Megamall’s new Directors Club at the mall’s new wing called Fashion Hall.

ay until five days after it has grossed P200 million, making it one of Star Cinema’s highest grossing film among its 20th anniversary releases.
I can understand why. The film has all the elements that make women swoon over Piolo Pascual from beginning to end.

Never mind Toni Gonzaga and Iza Calzado, movie fans just like to watch the actor on screen.

It has been sometime since Pascual played a role that made women’s hearts beating faster than usual. And in this film, it is evident that director Olivia Lamasan was careful in capturing the actor and making him look like the guy every woman wants to have as a groom.

Fans abroad flocked to the movie’s international premiere showing on Feb. 15 at the historic Fox Theater in Redwood City, California.
Lead actor Piolo Pascual must be commended for his performance as the heart-broken Marco, further proof of his status as one of the country’s box office actors even after 15 years in the industry. His chiseled looks and emotionally charged acting, combined with evident chemistry with both leading ladies Toni Gonzaga and Iza Calzado, Piolo is in perfect form as the classic rom-com actor.

Even director Olivia Lamasan said that Piolo’s role in Starting Over Again was just right for the seasoned actor. “For the longest time I’ve been looking for a material for PJ na palagi kong sinasabi na sa laki ng achievements mo sa buhay, sa laki ng narating mo, parang hindi na kita mahawakan. So naghahanap ako ng isang role para sa yo na mararamdaman kita ulit. At masasabi kong, ‘ah nasasaktan ka pa rin. Ah, nasasaktan ka, gusto kita yakapin.’ And this is the perfect role for him.”

Overwhelmed with the support, Piolo couldn’t thank his fans enough. “To everyone who came out and supported our film and bore the long lines, sitting in front of the movie house just to be able to watch the film…Thank you very much for believing and extending your support to Star Cinema and everyone who’s part of this project. We’re all humbled by your love…may we continue to spread love and harbor good feelings toward everyone…Mabuhay ang pelikulang Pilipino! To God be the glory!”

Starting Over Again is still showing, in 270 theaters nationwide. There will be international screenings in North America (Arkansas, Illinois, Hawaii, California, Nevada, Arizona, Florida, Washington, Texas, New Jersey, Maryland, and Virginia) and Canada (Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan).

Screenings in the Middle East (UAE, Qatar & Bahrain) and Australia ( Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane) will start on March 6.

Piolo Pascual, Toni Gonzaga to grace US premiere of ‘Starting Over Again’

REDWOOD CITY, California—Fresh from a recent fan-packed Manila premiere with a record-breaking opening day gross of P25 million, the Philippines’s “Ultimate Heartthrob” Piolo Pascual and actress-singer-host Toni Gonzaga will fly almost 8,000 miles to meet their fans in the San Francisco Bay Area for the U.S. premiere of the romantic comedy, “Starting Over Again.”

The premiere, a Valentine’s Day offering from ABS-CBN Star Cinema and TFC@TheMovies, is set for Feb. 15, Saturday, with 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. screenings at historic Fox Theatre in Redwood City.

“Starting Over Again” has generated huge buzz because of the chemistry of the two lead stars and the numerous positive reviews by critics, bloggers and fans who are raving over the brilliantly directed movie by the award-winning Olivia M. Lamasan.

Lamasan directed international Filipino blockbusters from Star Cinema like “Milan,” “In My Life,” “In the Name of Love” and “The Mistress,” to name a few.

The screenplay is by Carmi Raymundo who wrote the recent Kim Chiu-Xian Lim blockbuster, “Bride for Rent” and other hits like “My Amnesia Girl” and “It Takes A Man and a Woman.”

Toni plays Ginny—bubbly, brilliant and driven—a student in architecture, romantically pursues Marco (Piolo), a professor.

Eyebrows may be raised but the two genuinely fall in love, until one day, Ginny left for no apparent reason, breaking Marco’s heart.

Years later, their paths cross again: Ginny has the successful career that she dreamed of while Marco is now a chef, with a new ladylove in Patty (played by Iza Calzado). Seems like they are all happy. But Ginny wants Marco back. The journey of second chances begin with Ginny chasing Marco again. But will this have a happy ending or will it end again in heartbreak?

Joining Piolo, Toni and Iza in this romantic comedy are Joross Gamboa, Bryan Santos, Edgar Allan Guzman, Cai Cortez and Beauty.
