Local stars study under US acting coach

“THE FILIPINO actors are wonderful,” said a renowned American acting coach who had a chance to work with local actors like Piolo Pascual and Sam Milby in a workshop.

Ivana Chubbuck — who has trained famous Hollywood celebrities like Charlize Theron, Halle Berry, Brad Pitt, Beyonce Knowles, Eva Mendes, and Jim Carry, among others — arrived last Thursday to conduct a two-day workshop with select contract artists of listed Lopez-led media giant ABS-CBN Corp.

Ms. Chubbuck had been invited by Filipino director Rahyan Carlos, who had trained under the acting coach in Los Angeles. Mr. Carlos is the artist training head of Star Magic, the talent development arm of ABS-CBN.

Aside from Pascual and Milby, other ABS-CBN contract stars who participated in the workshop were Jake Cuenca, Xian Lim, Gerald Anderson, Arjo Atayde, and Dimples Romana. Non-contract stars like Suzette Ranillo, Issa Litton, and Carla Martinez, also joined the group.

The acting coach has taught at The Julliard School of Drama in New York, and was honored by the Russian International Film Festival with a lifetime achievement award alongside director Francis Ford Coppola, and actor Leonardo DiCaprio.

In 2004, she wrote the book The Power of the Actor: The Chubbuck Technique. She described her book as “the 12-step acting technique that will take you from script to a living, breathing, dynamic character.”

She explained her acting technique is based on emotional memory, which urges actors to use memories from their past to generate current emotions. “In order to recreate real human behavior, and truly be in the scene, and avoid acting it out, I teach actors to go the source of what motivates human behavior. This is why I do not believe in acting classes. You will not be a bear, you will not be a tree experiencing sap running down your bark. We will go directly to the script, doing script analysis from the viewpoint of the science of behavior on how and why people really behave,” she said.

“I will teach you to replicate the character from your own personal needs and life experiences. This creates a character that is vivid, authentic, and living, and breathing in the moment. The Chubbuck Technique is a way to realize and embody a character so that the character becomes you, and you become the character,” she added.

For the ABS-CBN workshop, Ms. Chubbuck personally assigned specific scenes to actors, which she critiqued after each performance.

“I have a game plan for each of my students. I analyze, and take into account the actor’s strength and weaknesses, his problem areas, his history, and assign material that will best facilitate his growth and advancement as an individual. I choose the appropriate script material that will quickly fix specific difficulties, thereby enabling the actor to expand his abilities in his craft, and enhance his capacity to get the job,” she said.

Ms. Chubbuck — who also worked with Jessica Alba, Ian Somerhalder, Jared Leto, America Ferrera, David Boreanaz, David Spade, and Kate Bosworth — said her clients succeeded in Hollywood because hard work, and their fearless attitude to take risks.

“You have to realize that Hollywood is a big pond, and you got to rise in that pond, which has sharks, piranhas, and bacteria. You should be able to have to right stuff to be able to tackle the piranhas and rise above it. You will need to have the skills,” she said.

Mr. Carlos said the network invited Ms. Chubbuck as part of it’s thrust to continuously improve the craft of the contract stars.

Star Magic will conduct an intensive acting workshop on Chubbuck Technique on March 22 and 23 which will be open to both amateur and professional actors. The workshops will be conducted by Mr. Carlos who is the only Filipino authorized and trained by Ms. Chubbuck to teach her technique in the Philippines.
