Piolo Pascual

Piolo Pascual: 2014 certified Box Office King

THE one and only Papa P., the Ultimate Heartthrob of the Philippines conquered the entertainment industry once again. In his recent mega box office movie Starting Over Again, he retained his stature as a bankable actor, box office producer, in-demand product endorser and a multi-platinum recording star. Piolo Pascual is a phenomenal artist in this generation.

I am so impressed by his perseverance and dedication to his profession. Success is a word that can easily be defined by everyone. But, it always takes a lot of hard work and passion to reach an evenly successful life. Piolo Pascual knew his destiny and therefore worked to achieve his long time dream of becoming a renowned actor.

Piolo’s father was a casting director for international films that were shot here in the Philippines. He was introduced in the world of theatre and acting when he joined his father’s school theatre group, Teatro ni Kiko.

During his high school years, he started appearing in That’s Entertainment in the 90’s. Piolo eventually left showbiz to focus on his college studies at the University of Sto. Tomas. In 1996, he migrated to the US together with his family.

Piolo worked as an ER representative. When he turned 21, he decided to return to Manila and pursue a showbiz career. His love team with Judy Ann Santos included big hits like Kahit Isang Saglit, Bakit Di Totohanin, Till There Was You, and Don’t Give Up on Us.

His movie with Claudine Barretto, Milan, was one of his top grossing films which won him Best Actor awards. In 2002 film Dekada 70, Piolo earned eight awards in the Best Supporting Actor category and was given a special recognition for this rare grand slam from winning all awards giving body.

His also received international accolades for his acting. He was recognized in Banff World Media Festival and International Emmy Awards. In 2013, Piolo went to Cannes for the movie On The Job.

I could tell a lot about Piolo’s achievements, but this page would not be enough to accommodate all of them. How did he reach all this success? His journey in showbiz was never easy. He experienced a lot of trials when people thought that his career is almost over and the undying rumors about his sexual orientation kept on going around the industry.

Despite of all the rumors and criticisms, Piolo kept his faith in God. He remained strong in the eyes of many.

Recently, Piolo admitted that he considered leaving showbiz to settle in America with his son Iñigo. The success of his film Starting Over Again with Toni Gonzaga prevented him from doing so. He gave everything to God whom he considers as the creator of his destiny. His recent box office movie earned more than P400 million.

He is very grateful to those who remained by his side and trusted in his ability and talent. True enough, Piolo Pascual is a good man blessed by his fervent faith.

You are one of a kind PJ, once again you have proven that “you can’t put a good man down.” Fans of Piolo Pascual will have a chance rekindle their devotion to this beloved heartthrob when he performs on April 11 at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe and April 13 at White Memorial Church in downtown Los Angeles. Toni not claiming credit for film’s success with Piolo

TONI Gonzaga doesn’t want to entertain the intriguing observation that she’s the reason Starting Over Again became a certified blockbuster and that she helped Piolo Pascual back to becoming a box-office star again.

Piolo Pascual and Toni Gonzaga

“I think that’s unfair,” she avers. “He is Piolo Pascual already. No matter what they say, his contribution to the industry can never be underestimated. When I was just starting in the ‘biz and eventually moved to ABS-CBN, it was my wish to do a project with him. I’m thankful that it happened and bore a very successful result.”

The actress-host believes that apart from her on screen chemistry with Piolo, the material itself is a huge come-on why the film delivered at the tills.

“Oh yes! I guess it’s just right timing and right project. For one, the story is not your usual fairy tale. It’s so mature that the twist is acceptable to the viewing public. It helped that contemporary movie buffs are more intelligent now. They appreciate realism in what they watch, which is a very good sign!”

Asked whom she wants to do a movie with in the near future, Toni reveals, “Bosing Vic (Sotto)! Everybody knows that I started with Eat Bulaga. We were supposed to do a movie intended for the MMFF before, remember? It just didn’t push through. I really wish to do a project with him so I can have a guesting stint in EB. It’s been 10 years since I left the show and I miss the whole gang!”

Rumor has it that she and boyfriend Paul Soriano are already engaged since December of last year only they’re keeping it a secret.

“It’s not true! If ever that time comes, we will not deny it. It’s something you should be proud of in the first place,” ends Toni.

‘Starting Over Again’ breaks records, passes P400M mark

MANILA – The first big screen team-up of Piolo Pascual and Toni Gonzaga made history on Saturday, becoming the first non-Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry to surpass the P400-million mark.

According to Star Cinema’s advertising and promotions manager Mico Del Rosario, “Starting Over Again” now ranks among the highest-grossing Philippine films of all time, just a month after it was released in theaters on February 12.

It bumped off the 2011 comedy film, “The Unkabogable Praybeyt Benjamin,” which earned P332 million during its run.

The film, which is Star Cinema’s Valentines’ Day offering, also broke records abroad, becoming the highest-grossing Filipino movie in the international box office.

It also beat the previous career records set by its lead stars Pascual and Gonzaga, as well as its director Olivia Lamasan (“Madrasta”, “The Mistress”, In the Name of Love”).

Written by Carmi Raymundo, “Starting Over Again” tells the story of college professor Marco (Pascual), whose girlfriend, Ginny (Gonzaga), left him without saying goodbye or giving an explanation.

Four years after the breakup, the two cross paths again at a time when Marco is already happy with a new partner, Patty (Iza Calzado).

Forced to work with Marco, who has also successfully pursued his passion to become a chef, Ginny starts to regret leaving him and tries to win him back.

“Starting Over Again,” which is part of the continuing 20th anniversary celebration of ABS-CBN film outfit Star Cinema, is still showing in over 270 theaters in the Philippines and in select theaters in the United States.

Iza to do a teleserye with Piolo

WOW, Ian F., le’t s congratulate Iza Calzado for having been tapped as tv host ng It’s Showtime at The Biggest Loser Pinoy Edition Doubles.

Both programs happen to be aired daily in ABS-CBN kaya Kapamilya followers get to watch her on tv twice a day.

Guess who is Iza’s ‘equal’ among the Kapamilya talents?

Kris Aquino, who is seen twice a day — in Kris TV and Aquino & Abunda Tonight.

“Alam n’yo,” said Iza, “ang makalinya ko lang si Kris is a great honor. I admire her kasi as a tv host.”

Iza is also proving her worth as an actress. To date, her performance as the ‘other woman’ in the still showing blockbuster movie, Starting Over Again, is still talk of the town.

After all, as she herself agree, it’s not easy to pit talent with the two of the most talented and versatile performers in the business, Piolo Pascual and Toni Gonzaga.

Anytime soon, Iza will realize her dream to play full-time leading lady to Papa P (everybody’s term of endearment for Piolo). They are doing a soap together.

Iza said she will never forget the fact that in her first movie, Milan, she had Papa P for her leading man. At heto, sa first full-length picture niya with Star Cinema na Starting Over, kapareha niya uli si Papa P.

Both Milan and Starting Over is directed by Olive Lamasan.

“I guess some people are truly lucky and I’m glad I am one of them. If I sound mayabang, well, masisisi n’yo ba ako?” waring nahihiyang pahayag ni Iza.

Ivana Chubbuck in Manila

Ivana Chubbuck in Manila, Bringing the class to acting

MANILA, Philippines – Entering show business seems to be one of the top career choices nowadays. Have a modicum of talent, possess a respectable amount of good looks, and it seems the proliferation of reality and talent shows beckon, fueled by dreams of stardom, fast money and lucrative endorsement deals. And that is the fact, along with the inescapable truth that while many are called and want to be actors, very few are ready to treat it like a true profession, put in the work and hone their craft so they emerge that rarity — a really good actor. After all, how many Matthew McConaugheys and Cate Blanchetts are there in the world?

As head of ABS-CBN Star Magic Acting Workshops, director Rahyan Carlos knows that improving one’s acting skills is a never-ending process. While many in the entertainment industry have concentrated on advancing technology, whether via camera work, special effects or set design, Rahyan has made it his calling to constantly upgrade what the workshops can mean within the context of what resources he can muster — and to place “acting” as the obvious core of his mission vision.

When Halle Berry won her Oscar for Monster’s Ball, it was the name of her acting coach, Ivana Chubbuck, that she screamed out during her acceptance speech. The likes of James Franco, Charlize Theron, Brad Pitt and Beyoncé are ready to give testimonials on her website. Rahyan put in the time to travel to L.A., learned the Chubbuck technique, went beyond her book The Power of the Actor and emerged as the only Filipino to be accredited as Chubbuck acting coach.

And just this month, Rahyan was able to convince Ivana to visit Manila and hold a two-day workshop at ABS-CBN’s Dolphy Theater. The idea was to give those who would participate a proverbial taste of what the Ivana Chubbuck Studio can offer — the apt metaphor as Ivana herself would stress was that this merely like licking the icing of a cake. For the observers, this was a chance to witness how a premier acting coach operates, putting the likes of participants Piolo Pascual, Xian Lim, Sam Milby, Dimples Romana, Gerald Anderson and Jake Cuenca, as well as those from the world of theater and hosting like Issa Litton, through their paces as they were assigned scenes from such celebrated films as Chasing Amy, The Breakfast Club, Girl Interrupted and Perks of Being A Wallflower, among others.

A no-nonsense, gritty teacher, Ivana spewed “fire” during the two days, challenging the actors to reassess their potential and use “substitution” as a means to unlock their power as actors. By employing the Chubbuck technique, this meant using what you have felt or undergone in your life as a key to giving life to the lines and the portrayal. Raw, heightened emotions are thus harnessed to give one’s acting a newfound dimension. And while that may seem simple in concept, tapping into that real emotion is a process that’s not obvious at all. Ivana would brazenly ask the participants about their personal lives, practically turning her Q&A into a form of psychoanalysis — this in order to identify the right “substitution.” It was revelatory, as some of the participants would be moved to tears, remembering the pain of a father who abandoned them, or a serious relationship that went awry. Just how integral a role the “acting coach” played in all this was very obvious, as some of these are memories and feelings one may have submerged and/or relegated to a dark corner of one’s psyche over time.

Without exception, the actors all saw the “method to the madness,” and their performances on the second day already showed marked improvements — making one wonder as to how it could create new standards if one underwent the full course as offered at Ivana’s studio. I observed some TV directors, cinematographers and acting neophytes in the audience, and they seemed enthralled by the process — how Ivana has systematically turned it into a technique, one that readily shows results.

What remains to be seen is how many of the actors will take the lessons during the two days to heart, and understand that they all have the opportunity to better their craft. As some of them are established stars, it can be so easy to sit back, stay within their comfort zone and believe they no longer have anything to prove. Ivana’s whirlwind two days here should be a potent reminder of how great acting is all about educated risks, about stretching and never being complacent, smug or satisfied.

Piolo almost bid showbiz goodbye

Piolo Pascual was all set for his curtain call prior to starting work on “Starting Over Again.” He, in fact, considered the film his swan song.

However, the success of the Olivia Lamasan-helmed drama made him change his mind.

“I was seriously considering quitting (showbiz) this year pero, when the movie became a big hit, I said the joke is on me. I guess hindi pa po time para umalis ako sa showbiz,” the hunk shared in an interview with ABS-CBN News.

“Starting Over Again,” which also stars Toni Gonzaga and Iza Calzado, has grossed P375 million in three weeks.

An emotional Piolo expressed gratefulness to fans during the thanksgiving party for the film held on Tuesday, saying, “Thank you for always being there para sabihin sa akin na huwag akong tanga at huwag ko isipin na umalis kasi hindi ko talaga alam. This was hard for me. Inayos ko na ang buhay ko. I was ready to settle down in the States. This could be my last. Maraming salamat sa tiwala kasi hindi ko talaga alam na aabot ako dito.”

The 37-year-old revealed that his son is among factors that made him consider quitting showbiz.

“I wanted to devote more time sa anak ko. Para bago man lang maging adult ang bata, I can give him more time physically. That’s one of the factors and parang gusto ko rin naman magpahinga, so iyon… Sometimes kailangan natin pagtuunan ng pansin ang ibang bagay para hindi tayo tumanda na may na-miss out tayo,” Piolo explained in a separate PEP interview.

Piolo said Iñigo didn’t agree with his plan. “(Sabi niya) ‘You can’t quit yet because I still wanna see you on TV.’ Sabi ko, ‘Ano ka ba naman, I wanna do this for you yet ayaw mo.'”

With this, Piolo deemed it “a sign.”

“There are some things na out of our control. I was planning something else, but I guess ABS-CBN had a different plan. God had a different plan kaya sabay na lang tayo sa agos,” he added.

“I thought kaya kong tuldukan, hindi pa pala. Bahala na ang Diyos, bahala na ang ABS-CBN. Happy ako, sobra.”

Piolo Pascual and Toni Gonzaga

‘Starting Over Again’ to have a sequel?

MANILA – Following the box-office success of Piolo Pascual and Toni Gonzaga’s first big-screen team-up, the actor revealed that Star Cinema is already planning to come up with a follow-up project for the two stars.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News on the sidelines of the movie’s thanksgiving party, Pascual said he is ecstatic that he will be given another opportunity to work with Gonzaga.

“Pinag-uuspaan na nila. Naghahanap na ng material. Hindi siguro sequel, baka prequel,” the actor said in jest.

Gonzaga, meanwhile, said a second movie with Pascual would be a treat since she waited 13 years before finally sharing the screen with the actor again.

The two first worked together in a memorable TV commercial.

“Siyempre kapag naging ganito ang resulta ng isang pelikula, mae-excite ka kung ano pa kaya ang pwedeng maibigay sa kanila, kung ano pa kaya ang pwedeng ma-offer. Pero siyempre depende pa rin yun sa management, kay Mr. M (Johnny Manahan). Baka may bago na namang leading lady si PJ,” she said.

Gonzaga said working with Pascual is important for her because it shows how far she has gone in show business.

“Ito ang pinakaimportanteng bahagi ng career ko kasi parang full circle. I started just screaming his name tapos naging leading lady. Dreams really do come true. Kapag may pangarap, never give up on your dreams,” she said.

According to Star Cinema, the total earnings of “Starting Over Again” in three weeks is P375 million, breaking the personal records of Pascual and Gonzaga.

Piolo nearly quit in showbiz

NOW it can be told, Ian F., that Piolo Pascual considered quitting showbiz pala this year kung ’di lang pumatok sa takilya ang still showing movie niya, Starting Over Again, with Toni Gonzaga for Star Cinema.

Piolo didn’t articulate why. Basta raw, binalak niya na mamirmihan na sa Amerika, where his mom and several of his siblings live along with 15-year-old son Iñigo.

Pero gaya raw ng sabi ng talent management arm ng ABS-CBN, Star Magic, headed by Direk Johnny Manahan and Mariole Alberto, may lugar pa si Piolo sa showbiz and he should not lose hope.

Kaya, grateful raw siya, bukod kina Toni at Iza Calzado (his leading ladies), kay Direk Olive Lamasan, with whom he last worked in the movie Milan.

Nagpapasalamat din daw siya lalo na kay Malou Santos, Star Cinema managing director.

SA victory blowout for the cast, production staff and everyone involved sa Starting Over…, no wonder na present din sina Charo Santos-Concio, president at CEO ng ABS-CBN, at Gabby Lopez, chairman of the board, ABS-CBN.

Nandu’n din sina Carlo Katigbak, head of Access, at Aldrin Cerrado, head of Finance ng ABS-CBN.

As of this writing, the film, which is on its fourth week, has reportedly grossed close to P400M.

* * *

Kaya, she had to rush herself to the hospital for first-aid treatment.

Sayang, nang finally nga ay makarating si Cai sa party, pack-up na ang lahat.

Pero natanggap pa rin niya ang kanyang bonus from Ma’am Malou herself.

For those of you who don’t know, Cai is the only daughter of Rez Cortez and wife Candy.

Rez takes pride in saying na natural comedienne ang kanyang anak.

* * *

Going back to the party, present din sina Lito Pimentel, Joross Gamboa, Edgar Allan Guzman, Bryan Santos at Ryan Yllana, who all played supporting roles sa pelikula.
